Lucy Lo Rasche, "Moments of Poetry"

My work is a reflection of my life journey in multiple, diverse cultural and spiritual environments and circumstances. Poetic expressiveness permeates my work, juxtaposing reality and imagination, the conscious and the subconscious, with symbolism inviting subjective associations and contemplation. 

One of the most fascinating perspectives to me is the contrast between the vastness of the universe and the limitations and aspirations of humans – who in their inner life can discover yet another seemingly infinite universe: “For the self is a sea boundless and measureless” (Khalil Gibran, “The Prophet”, On Self-Knowledge). The complex and often contradictory aspects of the human mind and spirit are a source of never-ending inspiration for me: our strength and weakness, courage and vulnerability, our rationality and spirituality… 

In the process of painting my poems, the works often outgrow my original idea. This intuitive evolution combines with the fluid brush strokes resulting from my original training in Chinese brush painting to give my paintings a surreal character.
